What is Erythritol?
Erythritol is a type of carbohydrate that occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables. It is commercially produced by fermentation from a simple sugar derived from corn (Dextrose). It is most commonly used as a zero-calorie sweetener to help replace calorie intake from carbohydrates and sugars in packaged foods and beverages.
Erythritol has been recognised as safe, and approved for use in food since the 1990s. Erythritol is better tolerated than many other sugar alcohols, which when eaten in excess can cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
Erythritol is not as sweet as sugar, it is around 70% as sweet. Many Erythritol users will combine it with Stevia to create a similar level of sweetness as sugar. Active Bio-Tech have a 97% Reb-A Organic Stevia, which is around 400 times as sweet as sugar that can be mixed with Erythritol to create a blended product.
Health Benefits
Erythritol is absorbed in the small intestine, but not metabolised. Instead it passes through the body unchanged, making it ideal for people with diabetes as there is no affect on blood glucose levels or insulin secretion.
Erythritol is beneficial to oral health as it does not promote tooth decay like sugar, and in fact decreases the amount of acid produced by the oral bacteria that can damage tooth enamel.
Erythritol can be used to replace the calories from carbohydrate and sugars in our diet.
